What is now New Caney was established in 1862 as Presswood, named after a local pioneer family. Its location along Caney Creek led to the establishment of cattle ranches and mills, and eventually the town grew. Today, New Caney is an ideal place to call home for people looking for the comfort of small-town life with proximity to all that the Greater Houston area has to offer.
There are ample opportunities here to enjoy nature, with hiking, camping and biking at the nearby East Texas Pineywoods. Lakes Conroe and Houston offer fishing, boating and other water sports.
New Caney is the hometown of the astronaut Robert Crippen, who was the pilot for the space shuttle Columbia on the first-ever orbital trip by a space shuttle. He returned to space on three other shuttle missions before becoming director of the Kennedy Space Center.
