Point Blank: Outdoor adventures in a neighborly community

What is now known as Point Blank was first settled in the first decades of the 19th century. R. T. Robinson is credited with establishing the first store in the community.

Around 1850, Florence Dissiway, a Frenchwoman from Alabama who worked for R.T. and his brother Henry’s families as a governess, gave the town the name Point Blanc (“white point”). It was eventually anglicized to Point Blank. A post office was opened in 1884.

Among the early residents was George T. Wood, who founded a plantation there as early as 1839. Wood won the 1847 election for governor, the second in Texas history, succeeding James Pinckney Henderson. Wood faced many challenges, including massive public debt. He suggested selling land to the U.S. government to ease that debt, but the proposal failed in the Texas Legislature. There was also a dispute with the federal government over the status of New Mexico. Texas saw it as part of its territory; the United States disagreed.

Other challenges during Wood’s term included reforming how the state government operated, establishing courts, and organizing towns and counties, a very contentious subject.

As a result of that conflict, Wood lost in the 1849 election to Peter H. Bell. Wood returned to Point Blank. He sought the governor’s seat twice more before his death, in 1858.

Today Point Blank is dramatically different than it was in Wood’s time. The construction of the reservoir that is now the 90,000-acre Lake Livingston has made Point Blank, sitting along the western shore, a destination for water sports enthusiasts. Fishing is great, with white bass, catfish, striped bass, crappies, and largemouth bass among the types of fish abundant there.

Point Blank has a public boat ramp for recreational boating and fishing on the lake, and nearby Wolf Creek Park offers family-style camping with amenities including fishing piers, boat ramps, a marina, and canoe and paddle boat rentals.
