Kingwood: From lumber to suburbia

Starting in 1892, the Foster family owned some of the land on which Kingwood sits today, and it eventually became part of the Foster Lumber Company.
That all changed in 1967, when that land was sold for development to King Ranch and the Friendswood Development Company, which was a subsidiary of Exxon.
Plans for a community were made and, in 1971, the first village was open. The community’s population exploded in the 1980s and 1990s, and continued development has led to there being more than 80,000 residents now.
