In the late 1880s, the area now known as Splendora was called Cox’s Switch. The name emerged after Charles Cox persuaded the HE&WT Railroad to install a narrow-gauge spur from Houston to transport lumber and cross-ties.

In the late 1880s, the area now known as Splendora was called Cox’s Switch. The name emerged after Charles Cox persuaded the HE&WT Railroad to install a narrow-gauge spur from Houston to transport lumber and cross-ties.

This expansion energized the local economy, creating a surge of jobs in rail and timber. Residents secured steady work in logging, farming, and sawmills, while others manufactured crossties or cut firewood to fuel steam engines.

In 1896, Cox recommended that the town change its name. Leaders chose “Splendora,” inspired by the “splendor of its floral environment.” The town was officially incorporated 70 years later, in 1966.

The Splendora of today retains its small-town sense of community with approximately 2,200 residents. Affordable homes and a quiet lifestyle have brought residents here.
