When used properly, propane is a safe and efficient energy source for your home. Still, it’s crucial for you to understand how to use it safely and know how to respond in the rare case of a leak. Our aim is to equip our customers with the propane safety knowledge necessary to handle these situations with confidence.

What does propane gas smell like?

Recognizing the smell of propane is important for safety reasons. If you don’t know its unique scent, it’s hard to detect a leak. Therefore, getting familiar with propane’s smell is essential to stay safe and minimize risks.

Propane itself is odorless, but during production, a chemical called ethyl mercaptan is added to give it a distinctive odor, often described as being like a skunk’s spray or rotten eggs. This helps people easily identify propane leaks.

I smell gas. What do I do?

First of all, don’t panic. Learn the steps below and you’ll have the confidence you need to protect your home and loved ones.

  1. Do not try to find the source of the odor yourself. Let the professionals handle it, and focus on your safety and the safety of those around you.
  2. Leave the house immediately, taking your pets, as well.
  3. Once you are a safe distance away from the leak, call 911 and Buster Brown.
  4. Before you go, make sure all potential ignition sources, like candles or cigarettes, are completely extinguished.
  5. As you exit, avoid touching anything that could create a spark, like light switches, phones or vape pens.
  6. If it’s safe to do so, turn off the propane supply valve on your tank. It’s important that everyone in your home know how to do this. If you’re unsure, contact Buster Brown for help.
  7. Stay at a safe distance while first responders and technicians work to find and fix the leak. Only return home after they give you the all-clear.
